Washington D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb is investigating conservative Catholic lawyer Leonard Leo and several conservative non-profit organizations linked to him, including the 85 Fund, the Federalist Society, and the Concord Fund. The attorney general is following allegations of improper spending at several non-profit groups with which he is associated.
Leonard Leo played an instrumental role in the vetting, nomination, and confirmation of several of the justices in the Supreme Court’s 6-3 majority, which overturned Roe v. Wade.
The extent and purpose of the investigation are not fully known. Catholic News Agency has reported that this investigation comes several months after the left-wing Campaign for Accountability (CfA) filed a complaint with the Internal Revenue Service alleging improper payments at what it called ‘Leo-affiliated nonprofits.’
‘The CfA suggested that these groups may have “diverted substantial portions of their income and assets, directly or indirectly, to the personal benefit of Leonard Leo.”
Leo is Catholic and has served as the national co-chairman of Catholic outreach for the Republican National Committee and was a strategist for George W. Bush’s successful 2004 re-election bid. He played a prominent role in promoting all three of former President Trump’s Supreme Court nominations.’The CfA suggested that these groups may have “diverted substantial portions of their income and assets, directly or indirectly, to the personal benefit of Leonard Leo.”
Pro-abortion protestors have regularly berated Leo with anti-Catholic slurs since the Dobbs decision.
This investigation illustrates a double standard, according to Catholic journalist Christopher Manion, who pointed out that Black Lives Matter activists have not been investigated for their involvement in violent incidents targeted against Leo and Catholics.
CatholicVote reported in July that Since the Dobbs decision, Leo’s home has been the site of many pro-abortion demonstrations, where protestors have regularly berated him with anti-Catholic slurs.
