The Knights of Columbus has filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration, alleging religious discrimination after being denied a permit to hold their traditional Memorial Day mass at the Poplar Grove National Cemetery. This denial marks the second consecutive year that the group has been refused a permit, despite having conducted the service at the cemetery for over 60 years.
The Knights of Columbus has also filed a motion for a temporary restraining order against the National Park Service (NPS), citing a violation of the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). The NPS defended its decision, stating that national cemeteries are reserved for official commemorative activities related to military service or of historic significance to the cemetery.
Does offering a Mass for 60 years in honor of those who fought for our country not count as historically significant?
Is offering a Mass for those who served our country unrelated to military service?
You and I both know the correct answer to these questions.
The NPS has classified religious services as “demonstrations” and prohibited them in national cemeteries since at least 1986. Attorneys representing the Knights argue that the NPS’s actions constitute unlawful discrimination and censorship, and are seeking relief to uphold the tradition. A court hearing for the temporary restraining order is scheduled to take place soon, while the National Park Service has refrained from commenting on the pending litigation.
