Former President Donald Trump believes that God shielded him from assassination during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, where a gunman opened fire, killing one person and injuring two others. Trump wrote on Truth Social that “it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening” and expressed his love for the families of the victims.

Several prominent Republicans, including Senators Marco Rubio and Cory Booker, echoed Trump’s sentiments, with Rubio writing that “God protected President Trump” and Booker saying that “divine intervention” foiled the assassination attempt. Other Republican lawmakers, such as House Speaker Mike Johnson and Representative Steve Scalise, also attributed the former president’s survival to divine intervention.

The shooting suspect, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, has been identified, but no motive has been revealed. The victim who was killed has been identified as 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, who was a firefighter. Two others, 57-year-old David Dutch and 74-year-old James Copenhaver, were injured and are in stable condition.

The incident has sparked concern about political violence and the tone of political discourse in the country. Many top Democrats, including President Joe Biden, have condemned the violence and called for calm. The incident is likely to roil the current presidential race and spark debate about political rhetoric and its impact on society.
