The federal government has expressed concerns about the potential for violence and civil disturbances surrounding the 2024 U.S. presidential election, particularly from supporters of former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement. The FBI’s efforts are presented to address domestic terrorism without appearing politically biased, despite most of its anti-government investigations focusing on Trump supporters.
The FBI faces a challenging balancing act. On one hand, it aims to prevent a repeat of the January 6, 2021, Capitol mostly peaceful protest. On the other hand, it must uphold the constitutional rights of Americans to campaign, express themselves, and protest. Focusing on Trump and his MAGA supporters risks provoking anti-government activists. The FBI must tread carefully, especially amid allegations that the Bureau is being used as a political tool by the Biden administration.
The Biden administration has portrayed Trump and MAGA Republicans as a significant threat to American democracy, highlighting the risk of domestic terrorism and violence during the 2024 election campaign.
The FBI’s data indicates a rise in domestic terrorism-related investigations, with a particular focus on Trump supporters. The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security have noted that threats from domestic violent extremists (DVEs) have increased in recent years, driven by factors like election fraud narratives, the Capitol breach, the COVID-19 pandemic, and conspiracy theories promoting violence. These threats are primarily associated with right-wing groups and Trump supporters.
The FBI subtly shifted its categorization of domestic extremists, introducing “AGAAVE-Other” to include individuals motivated by a desire to commit violence against those associated with a specific political party or faction. Although not explicitly mentioned, this category primarily applies to political violence linked to Trump’s supporters.
Experts and officials disagree on whether terms like “domestic terrorism” and “domestic violent extremism” accurately describe the current situation. Some argue that these terms don’t fully capture the nature of the threat, while others believe they are divisive and overstated.
The revelation that the FBI specifically targets some Trump supporters is fueling accusations that the Bureau is being used as a political tool by the Biden administration. Some Republicans have called for defunding the FBI over allegations of bias.
Despite the rhetoric surrounding domestic terrorism, the FBI states that limited resources are allocated to this issue. Only about 3% of the FBI’s employees focus on domestic terrorism, and the number of intelligence reports on domestic terrorism remains relatively minor compared to international matters. Regardless of how they try to whitewash these efforts as a ‘small’ task force, it is still highly suspicious. The FBI has vast resources, so even a small percentage can mean tens of millions of dollars. Additionally, it is even more suspicious after so few investigations and arrests occurred after the 2020 summer riots. It was evident that these events were politically biased. Many of the responses by senators, congressmen, and even Joe Biden rarely if never, denounced these events but encouraged. So why has the FBI not investigated or targeted these left-wing activities and political leaders?

As the 2024 election approaches, there is growing pressure to prevent law-breaking, potentially involving infiltration of political circles. The term “domestic terrorism,” however, remains a subject of debate, and experts question whether it accurately characterizes the current situation in the United States. The FBI’s role in addressing domestic extremism – especially when most of the investigations are targeted at Trump and his supporters – continues to be a contentious issue, misuse of power and attack on Americans.
