Republican Congressman Steve Scalise has been nominated as the GOP candidate for House Speaker in a private vote, replacing Kevin McCarthy.

Scalise, a pro-life candidate, won the vote after first a motion to set a minimum target number of candidate votes was rejected. Under GOP rules, the private vote suggests that Republicans will support Scalise on the House floor, allowing a quick and successful vote to take place.

However, concerns have been raised over Scalise’s current health issues. The Congressman has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and is undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
