As per a recent report, “faithful Catholic colleges” are witnessing a rise in enrollment. The Cardinal Newman Society is attributed to this increase as it publishes a guide of faithful colleges.
Patrick Reilly, President of the Cardinal Newman Society, stated to The Daily Signal, “We keep hearing people refer to a ‘Newman movement’ because these faithful Catholic colleges just keep growing and setting the example of how to attract families today.”
Belmont Abbey College, for instance, saw a 10% increase in enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year, with its largest incoming class ever of 1,654 students. Likewise, Benedictine College in Kansas had a record undergraduate class of 2,213 students, marking a 121% growth over the past two decades. Other schools, including Catholic University of America and Christendom College, have also seen similar interest.
The University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota, and Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio, both conservative Catholic universities, welcomed their biggest freshmen classes in history. In fact, Franciscan’s increased enrollment has led to standing room only at daily Masses.
Thomas Aquinas College also reached its capacity and in 2019 added a second campus in Massachusetts. The school has a history of producing priests and other religious vocations, such as nuns.
The growing interest in faithful Catholic universities comes as some once-solid colleges, such as the University of Notre Dame, embrace abortion and transgenderism. Recently, the university allowed a drag show on campus, which drew a rebuke from the local bishop, Kevin Rhoades. During Mass on campus, Bishop Rhoades condemned the drag show as “unholy” and had previously rebuked the university for hosting an “abortion doula” on campus.
