According to the Argentine newspaper Infobae, Pope Francis has stated that his potential visit to Argentina is not contingent on the result of the upcoming presidential elections. In an article published on Nov. 14, Infobae reported that the Pope said: “My visit to Argentina does not depend on the victory or defeat of any party,” and “there are no conditions on my decision.” The article also stated that the Holy Father is unhappy with priests who are speaking on his behalf about a possible visit without authorization. The Pope’s alleged comments were reportedly in response to an article in the French newspaper La Croix, which suggested that a victory by Javier Milei would cause the projected trip to fall apart, while a win by Sergio Massa would allow the Pope to visit.
On Nov. 19, the presidential runoff or second round of elections will be held in Argentina. The contenders are current minister of economy, Sergio Massa, who is running for the Union for the Homeland party, and economist Javier Milei of the Freedom Advances party. Massa invited the Pope to visit Argentina in 2024 during a debate held last Sunday. Milei, who has previously criticized Pope Francis, has since apologized and invited him to come to Argentina.
