Prominent Catholic leader and evangelist Bishop Robert Barron criticized the Summer Olympics’ opening ceremonies in Paris this week for “mocking this very central moment in Christianity.”

Barron, who heads the Diocese of Winona-Rochester in Minnesota and is a well-known Catholic figure, expressed his dismay in a video posted to X on Friday. He denounced the portrayal of drag queens mimicking Christ and his apostles at the Last Supper during the opening ceremony of the summer games in Paris.

Describing the display as a “gross mockery of the Last Supper,” Barron shared his disappointment with his over 285 thousand X followers on Friday. He also spoke to Fox News Digital, emphasizing that the performance of the drag queen “Last Supper” indicated a passive and weak attitude among Christians in the West.

The controversial presentation featured various performers, including drag queens and a large woman wearing a halo crown, parodying Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic painting “The Last Supper.” This depiction triggered outrage among Christians and conservatives online, including Barron, who expressed his concern over a country with a strong Catholic background mocking such a significant event from the Gospels.

Barron highlighted that the portrayal was disrespectful to France’s rich Catholic history and cultural values, noting its deep roots in Christianity. He emphasized the need for Christians, especially Catholics, to stand firm against such anti-Christian sentiments and not remain passive or timid.

The bishop urged Christians to resist evil and confront cultural adversaries, drawing parallels to Martin Luther King Jr.’s non-violent activism. He encouraged calling out evil, identifying it, amplifying its negativity, and using social media as a tool to combat such injustices effectively.
