A gathering of mourners from across the country assembled in Freeport on July 18 to pay tribute to Corey Comperatore, the 50-year-old retired fire chief who tragically lost his life when a gunman made an attempt on former President Donald Trump’s life last Saturday.

Mr. Comperatore, a devoted husband and father of two daughters, attended former President Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, near his rural western Pennsylvania home.

Seated on bleachers behind the podium, he witnessed the former President’s speech. When shots rang out, Mr. Comperatore instinctively shielded his family from harm.

In an interview with The New York Post, Mr. Comperatore’s wife, Helen, disclosed that his final words were, “Get down!”

While former President Trump sustained a minor injury from the shooting, Mr. Comperatore tragically lost his life. The two other men shot at the rally, David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74, were upgraded from critical to serious condition on July 18, according to Allegheny Health Network.

The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was identified by the FBI and was neutralized by Secret Service snipers.

Mourners gathered outside Laube Hall at Freeport Community Park reflected on Mr. Comperatore’s heroism and shared their sorrow with The Epoch Times. A graduate of Freeport High School, he was hailed as a local hero.

Mr. Comperatore, a 10-year U.S. Army Reserves veteran, served as chief of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company before prioritizing family time. He was a respected life member of the department, and his firefighting equipment is on display at the firehouse.

On July 18, fire trucks from various departments in the region were visible outside Laube Hall.
