The St. Louis Cardinals caused a stir on social media when some players celebrated a home run by putting one hand over their right ear and raising their fist in the air, sparking speculation that it was a tribute to former President Donald Trump. However, Cardinals player Matt Carpenter denied that it was a political statement, saying it was actually a reference to the team’s designated hitter Alec Burleson’s college days when he went by the nickname “Biscuit” and wore invisible headphones during performances.
Keith Olbermann, a sports commentator, took to X(Twitter) to express his outrage, calling for the players to be banned from baseball for life, for the Cardinals franchise to be confiscated, and for Busch Stadium to be imploded. He compared the players to “Trump Nazis” and said they should “stick to sports.” Olbermann also did not comment on another incident where Tampa Bay Rays infielder Taylor Walls held up a fist and yelled “fight, fight” after hitting a double against the New York Yankees.
It seems that Olbermann was selective in his outrage, choosing to focus on the Cardinals’ celebration while ignoring a similar celebration by another player.
