Sotomayor Criticized for Gun Rights Stance After Guards Shoot Carjacker

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, faced backlash on social media and from some gun rights groups after a would-be carjacker was shot and injured by her personal bodyguards in New York City.

According to reports, the incident occurred on October 21 when a man attempted to steal Sotomayor’s vehicle in Manhattan. The justice’s bodyguards responded quickly and shot the assailant, who was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Some gun rights advocates criticized Sotomayor’s views on gun control, which they claim are inconsistent with her decision to have armed bodyguards. Sotomayor has been a strong advocate for stricter gun control measures, including universal background checks and limits on high-capacity magazines.

“Justice Sotomayor’s double standard is staggering,” tweeted National Rifle Association (NRA) spokesperson Dana Loesch. “She thinks the rest of us don’t need guns for self-defense, but she’s got her own armed entourage. #DoubleStandard”

Others took to social media to express similar sentiments, with some calling for Sotomayor to “practice what she preaches” when it comes to gun control.

The incident has sparked a lively debate about the intersection of gun rights and personal safety, with some arguing that even those who support stricter gun control measures may still choose to exercise their Second Amendment rights in certain circumstances.
