The former battalion commander of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s previous Minnesota Army National Guard unit has strongly criticized Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate amidst increasing “stolen valor” allegations, according to reports from the media.
John Kolb, who served as a lieutenant colonel of the 1st Battalion, 125th Field Artillery from 2005 to 2007, expressed his views on Facebook regarding Walz’s military service.
Despite retiring early from the Minnesota National Guard, not completing the Sergeants Major Academy, and not advancing to the rank of Sergeant Major, Kolb believes that Walz’s decision to step aside allowed for better leadership.
Walz has faced accusations of “stolen valor” for claiming to be a “retired Command Sergeant Major” despite having his rank reduced to Master Sergeant after retirement.
Kolb pointed out that Walz, who retired in 2005 after 24 years of service, did not earn or fulfill any assignments at the E9 level.
The Harris campaign had initially promoted Walz as a “retired Command Sergeant Major” before adjusting his biography to state that he “served as a command sergeant major.”
Kolb emphasized that Walz’s use of the title is disrespectful to the Noncommissioned Officer Corps and highlighted the accomplishments of retired Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Behrends.
Behrends, who succeeded Walz in the battalion, has been critical of Walz’s military record and the use of his rank to enhance his political career.
Social media posts by Kolb and Behrends have drawn attention to the controversy, with calls for the media to address the issue.
