Greenland leaders ready to talk with Trump after president-elect expressed interest to make territory part of America

Greenland’s leader, Múte Egede, has expressed readiness to engage in talks with President-elect Donald Trump concerning the future of Greenland. This interest comes after Trump has indicated a desire for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, a mineral-rich Arctic territory. Egede has emphasized Greenland’s aspiration for independence, stating that Greenland is for the Greenlandic people and they do not want to be Danish or American. However, he is open to discussions about what unites Greenland and the U.S., focusing on cooperation and dialogue to find solutions. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has also shown willingness to discuss these matters with Trump, though she does not expect a meeting before his inauguration.

 

Denmark retains nominal sovereignty over Greenland, which has been a self-governing territory since 1953, with the right to pursue independence through a referendum granted in 2009. Greenland’s strategic significance has grown with the melting of Arctic ice, opening new shipping routes and making it a focal point for geopolitical interest due to its natural resources.
