January 11 – St. Hyginus

Articles, Saints | January 10, 2025 | by Catholics for Catholics

Saint Hyginus was the Pope of Rome from c. 138 to c. 142. He is said to have been a Greek by birth and a philosopher by profession before his conversion to Christianity. Little is known of his pontificate, but it is believed that he may have been martyred during the persecution of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius. He is venerated as a martyr and saint by the Catholic Church.

It is known that Pope Hyginus battled the Gnostic heresy, decreed that churches had to be consecrated before Mass could be celebrated inside them, and established the practice of baptismal sponsors for the baptism of infants — Pope Hyginus basically came up with the idea of godparents.

Prayer to St. Hyginus:

Dear Saint Hyginus, we pray to you for guidance and strength. May your wisdom and wisdom guide us in our daily lives. Help us to stay true to our faith and to live a life that is pleasing to God. We ask for your intercession in all our needs and that through your example we may grow in holiness and love.
