The Defense Secretary is ordering some of the names in Navy ships to be changed, according to The New York Post.

Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the Navy to review changing the name of several ships, including one with the name of Harvey Milk, a Korean war veteran who was one of the first openly gay elected officials of San Francisco. Other names considered are Harriet Tubman and the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

According to John Phelan, the Navy Secretary, the name review is intended at “reestablishing the warrior culture” in the military, a priority of the Trump administration, according to an internal memo attained by CBS News.

“Secretary Hegseth is committed to ensuring that the names attached to all [Department of Defense] installations and assets are reflective of the Commander-in-Chief’s priorities, our nation’s history, and the warrior ethos,” Chief Pentagon Spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement. “Any potential renaming(s) will be announced after internal reviews are complete.”

Phelan and his team are expected to announce a new name for the USNS Harkey Milk, which is a replenishment oiler, by the end of June, which is considered to be pride month, according to the Associated Press. Milk, a Korean War veteran, was expelled from the Navy for being gay.

Milk would go on to become one of the first openly gay politicians. He was elected to serve on the San Francisco Board of supervisors in 1977. He later became one of the first openly gay elected officials in American history, when he successfully ran to serve on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977.

The USNS Harvey Milk, which provides support to carrier strike groups at sea, was named under the Biden administration in 2021.
