The safety of the abortion pill is under scrutiny. Again.
Marty Makary, the Food and Drug Administration Commissioner said he would commit to reviewing the safety of the abortion pill, said Senator Josh Hawley.
Hawley(R-MO), posted a letter he got from Makary on social media, mentioning the FDA head promised to assess the safety of mifepristone, the abortion drug. In addition, Makary said that Mifepristone is at this time caught in legal skirmishes.
“FDA generally does not comment on matters that are the subject of pending litigation and therefore is unable to provide further information on this topic at this time,” Makary said. “FDA is committed to safeguarding public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and quality of the products it regulates. The Agency carefully evaluates the scientific data, leveraging rigorous science to make informed decisions.”
According to the Daily Wire, an examination released in April found that more than one in 10 women suffered a “serious adverse event” after taking mifepristone in 2023. This can include hemorrhaging, requiring a blood transfusion, being taken to the emergency room, and deadly conditions like sepsis.
The effects of mifepristone are about 22 times higher than what the FDA listed on its label for the brand Mifeprex in 2023, according to the Daily Wire. The FDA cited clinical studies saying less than 0.5% of women suffered “serious adverse reactions” to mifepristone.
