General Michael Flynn, former national security advisor to President Trump, announced that he had reached a settlement with the US Department of Justice after a decade-long legal battle stemming from the Russia hoax that targeted the president and his team during his first term.
In December 2016, before President Trump took office but after he won the election, Gen. Flynn had conversations with Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislyak. US intelligence agencies were already surveilling the ambassador’s communications, unbeknownst to Flynn.
President Obama’s FBI interviewed Gen. Flynn in January 2017 and asserted that they had a transcript of his call with Kislyak. Despite the investigators’ own notes, later disclosed, that indicated they believed Flynn was being truthful during this interview, they charged him with making false statements. The DOJ was also alleging that Flynn, via his firm Flynn Intel Group, had violated FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act). Word began circulating that the DOJ might try to charge Flynn’s son, who was an employee of the firm, and potentially send him to prison. An off-the-books discussion (which is illegal) was had between Flynn’s lawyers and the DOJ, where they agreed that if Flynn pled guilty, they would not prosecute his son, who was just about to welcome his first child.

Gen. Flynn asserted that the prosecutors acted in bad faith and filed a lawsuit in 2023 citing wrongful and malicious prosecution. The DOJ settlement resolves that lawsuit.
In a statement on his substack, Gen. Flynn wrote,
“Nothing can fully compensate for the hell that my family and I have endured over these many years—the relentless attacks, the destruction of reputations, the financial ruin, and the profound personal toll inflicted upon us all. No amount of money or formal resolution can erase the pain caused by a prosecution that should never have been brought.”
“This ordeal stemmed from partisan government officials in a coordinated effort to pursue an innocent man as part of a broader campaign to undermine President Trump and his administration. It was a relentless, partisan pursuit that weaponized federal law enforcement in an audacious and unjust manner.”
Gen. Flynn, a Catholic, is an advisor to Catholics for Catholics and recently spoke at the 2026 Catholic Prayer for America event.
In closing his statement, Gen Flynn said, “My family and I remain grateful for the support of so many who stood by us. It was their support and our faith in God Almighty that sustained us and gave us the strength to endure. I will continue to advocate for the restoration of integrity in all our institutions.”
