Between a ceasefire, talks and the Strait of Hormuz debacle, to Americans, the war in Iran looks like a deal far from done, according to a new CBS Poll.
According to a story by Newsmax, most Americans don’t think the goals of the U.S. in Iran have been well defined or attained, according to a new CBS News poll, underscoring skepticism about where the war is heading.
The CBS Poll found that 66% of respondents say the Trump administration has not plainly described its aims in Iran, while 34% say those goals have been visibly communicated.
Among those who said the goals were unclear, most cited shifting explanations rather than a complete absence of stated objectives.
Public doubts extend to whether U.S. efforts are succeeding.
Regarding if the conflict has been successful in advancing U.S. strategic interests, only 25% of Americans said they agreed, while 42% said it has not, with a third saying it’s too soon to tell.
As for military operations they were in the same way divided, with 36% calling them successful, 33% unsuccessful, and 31% unsure.
On specific goals, few Americans believe progress has been made.

Still, most said the U.S. has not yet halted Iran from being a menace to other countries, permanently stopped its nuclear program, or safeguarded the safety and freedom of its people. In each case, fewer than 15% said those goals had been achieved.
The CBS News/YouGov survey was handled April 8-10 among 2,387 adults nationwide, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.
The poll also showed a bigger frustration with the administration’s handling of the issue. By and large, 64% of Americans disapprove of President Donald Trump’s approach to Iran compared with 36% who approve.
Public sentiment about the conflict remains mostly pessimistic.
