Latin Patriarch Condemns Desecration of the Representation of Jesus Crucified by an Israeli Soldier in Lebanon

On Sunday April 19th, Catholics for Catholics issued a strong call for “holy reparation” after a widely circulated image appeared to show an Israeli soldier smashing a statue of Jesus Christ during military operations in southern Lebanon.

“We waited till the IDF itself confirmed the authenticity of this before reposting. Now that it has, let this photo sink in. This act of aggression towards Christians by the 1948 State of Israel is not a one off isolated incident. Wake up America. In fact it was only a few weeks ago that the Latin Patriarch, Cardinal Pizzaballa was refused entrance into the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday of all days.

In a post shared on X, Catholics for Catholics said they had waited for confirmation before commenting, stating that the authenticity of the image had been verified before it chose to amplify it. CforC described the act as part of a broader pattern, asserting that aggression toward Christians in the region is “not a one-off isolated incident.”

Make no mistake. To be our “greatest ally” you cannot be an enemy of America’s “greatest friend.” As a Christian country that “greatest friend” of America is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This goes for the 1948 State of Israel just as much as it does for Muslim countries who slaughter Christians in the thousands.

On our knees before Christ the King crucified, we humbly ask forgiveness for our own sins and for the evil act of this IDF soldier.

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Luke 23”

The development comes alongside a newly released statement signed by Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa on Monday April 20th, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, which further underscores the seriousness of the situation. The Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land confirmed that attacks by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Christians are “not isolated incidents but many.”

Cardinal Pizzaballa expressed “profound indignation and unreserved condemnation of the desecration of a representation of Jesus Crucified by an Israeli soldier in a Lebanese village.” The statement added: “This act constitutes a grave affront to the Christian faith and adds to other reported incidents of desecration of Christian symbols by IDF soldiers in southern Lebanon.”

According to the Assembly, such actions not only violate the dignity of sacred symbols but also point to a troubling pattern that demands accountability and a renewed commitment to respect religious sites and communities.

Catholics for Catholics echoed these concerns, framing the act not only as an attack on a religious image but as an offense against Christians more broadly. They also linked the incident to wider geopolitical tensions, arguing that the treatment of Christian communities in conflict zones deserves greater attention.

At the same time, the group emphasized a spiritual response, calling on believers to seek reparation and engage in prayer.

The situation highlights growing concern among Catholics and other Christian leaders over the protection of religious communities and sacred symbols in areas affected by ongoing conflict. Church authorities in the Holy Land have called for accountability, restraint, and a renewed pursuit of peace as tensions in the region continue.
