As Mexico prepares to host the World Cup, one of the biggest international sporting events in history, a shooting at its Teotihuacán pyramids has left international observers worried about the country’s safety, as the gunfire left at least one person dead and several people injured.

According to initial information, a man fired shots at the popular archaeological site, killing a Canadian woman before taking his own life, the cabinet said on X, according to a story by CNN.

Authorities have seized a firearm, a bladed weapon and live cartridges at the site.

In addition, at least six people were injured — four by gunshots and two by falling — and they are receiving medical attention, the State of Mexico said.

The shooting left two Colombian nationals wounded, one Canadian and one Russian, according to Cristóbal Castañeda, secretary of security for the State of Mexico. He told reporters that the situation is now under control.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said federal, state and local agencies are responding to the shooting rampage.

“What happened today in Teotihuacán deeply hurts us. I express my most sincere solidarity with the people affected and their families. We are in contact with the Canadian Embassy,” she said.

Mexico has been under intense scrutiny by the Trump administration. President Donald Trump says that he personally likes Sheinbaum, but that she does not run the country; the cartels do.

Trump has said on several occasions that American forces can wipe out the cartels and has offered Sheinbaum help. But Mexico’s president has declined, saying that her country is a sovereign nation and will not accept military interference.

Teotihuacán is a major archaeological site and tourist destination in the State of Mexico, located about 30 miles northeast of Mexico City. The big archaeological zone, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is lined with multiple monuments including two towering pyramids.
