President Donald Trump blasted the leadership of the German Chancellor on social media, as he lambasted Europe’s response to the U.S. and Israel’s ongoing war in Iran.
Friedrich Merz, Trump wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday, “thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon.”
Previously, Merz, who criticized Trump and said clearly Iran was showing it was the stronger of the two nations during the current peace negotiations, has said Tehran must never get a nuclear weapon, according to a story by Newsmax.
Trump, posting on Truth Social, claimed Merz “thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon” and “doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” a charge that added to the strained relations between Washington and key NATO allies.
A day before, Merz had said that Iran’s leadership was “humiliating” the United States in ongoing efforts to negotiate an end to the war, pointing to episodes in which U.S. officials traveled for talks only to leave without concrete progress.
Merz also doubted the broader U.S. strategy, saying he did not see a clear exit plan from the conflict, remarks that amounted to one of the sharpest public criticisms yet from a European leader aligned with the United States.
The Merz-Trump war of words comes as both NATO allies quarrel over the U.S. administration’s aggressive posture in the region, particularly an American-led blockade around the Strait of Hormuz aimed at restricting Iran’s oil exports and military resupply.
According to the Newsmax story, the comments made by the German Chancellor underscored the divide between his nation and the U.S., suggesting some allies had reservations not only about the success of U.S. tactics but also about whether Washington has conveyed a practical path to ending the conflict.
Meanwhile, Trump has depicted the allied reluctance as a failure to defy Iran decisively, arguing that a stronger, united action — including support for the Hormuz blockade — is essential to force Tehran into concessions on both its regional activities and nuclear program.
