President Donald Trump on Tuesday restated he will not extend the peace truce with Iran, adding that “I expect to be bombing” after the deadline is over.
Trump heralded a hardnosed stance as negotiations persist, stressing that the United States holds a prevailing military position and is poised to act if a treaty is not reached by the Wednesday time limit, according to a story by Newsmax.
“Well, I expect to be bombing because I think that’s a better attitude to go in with,” Trump said, while also noting that the U.S. military is “raring to go.”
The President denoted that while talks are in progress, they are out of time and he is reluctant to draw out the truce solely to hold negotiations.
“I don’t want to do that,” he said when asked about extending the deadline, underscoring his preference for strongminded action.
Still, Trump showed optimism that Iran could finally agree to terms, saying, “I think we’re going to end up with a great deal. I think they have no choice.”
Trump described the conflict as a long-overdue retort to decades of hostility from Tehran, accusing Iran’s leadership of widespread violence and instability in the region.
He argued that prior administrations failed to act decisively.
“We have 47 years with these bloodthirsty people, have been killing a lot of soldiers, a lot of our soldiers and a lot of other people,” Trump said. “They killed 42,000 people over the last two months. And, you know, you get to a point where people don’t want to mention that.”
He pointed to the severe damage already wreaked on Iran’s military, indicating that Washington has the upper hand during negotiations.
“We’ve taken out their navy, we’ve taken out their air force, we’ve taken out their leaders,” Trump said, describing what he portrayed as a wide-ranging demolition of Iran’s military foundation.
