As the war between Russia and Ukraine rages on, there is one more chilling, ominous peril that lingers in the balance: the threat of a nuclear disaster.

According to a story by Newsmax, Russian control of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant could lead to a Chernobyl-like catastrophe, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an exclusive interview.

Zelenskyy, speaking with Newsmax foreign correspondent Shelby Wilder, cautioned that Moscow’s continued occupation and militarization of crucial nuclear centers present a dire threat not only to Ukraine but to the whole world.

“When they occupied it … they hit the blocks by tanks, by artillery, by different weapons,” he said, referring to Russian actions at the Zaporizhzhia facility.

“So of course, it could be a disaster,” he said during the interview airing Monday on “American Agenda.”

Zelenskyy mentioned repeated attacks, including drone strikes and missile activity near nuclear infrastructure, as proof that Russia is recklessly endangering global safety.

Zaporizhzhia, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been under Russian control since early in the war.

The Ukrainian leader described the situation as “nuclear blackmail,” accusing Moscow of using the plant as leverage in the broader conflict.

“Russians are absolutely crazy to attack a nuclear station,” he said.

Zelenskyy called on international partners to step up, stressing that the stakes go far beyond Ukraine’s borders.

“We have to use air defense in Chernobyl to save the planet — not only Ukraine,” he said.
