Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is asking for a far-reaching property tax cut that, if approved by voters this autumn, would pardon millions of Florida homeowners from paying taxes on their primary residence — and provide him with a crucial policy win as he prepares to end his second term.
On Wednesday, the GOP governor presented his long-awaited plan he wants the Legislature to approve during a special session he scheduled to run from June 1 to June 3. If Republican leaders approve of DeSantis’ plan, it will also concede the GOP a way to contend it is addressing the state’s persistent affordability crisis heading into the midterms, according to a Newsmax story.
DeSantis’ proposal would increase Florida’s homestead exemption to $250,000 for primary residences. The governor said the move would do away property taxes completely for about 60% of Florida homeowners who currently qualify for the exemption.

“That is the best way we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of people, particularly those who are trying to make ends meet,” DeSantis said during a press conference in Tampa announcing the plan.
This would be Desantis’ last major domestic policy initiative as he enters the final stretch of his second term. Nevertheless, the proposal is expected to confront major political and fiscal difficulties before it can take effect.
Still, DeSantis called the proposal “historic” and rekindled his old claim that homeowners should not effectively be “renting” their homes from the government through perpetual property tax payments.
“I really look forward to the day where a Floridian, and if this passes, will be a reality, where you really do own your own home,” DeSantis said.
