On Monday, Fox News published a report that Catholic churches in New York City in particular are drawing droves of Gen Z amid a conversion boom.
“Generation Z is ditching the “spiritual but not religious” label for the pews of the Roman Catholic Church, fueling a conversion boom that experts say is driven by a desire for moral order, ancient tradition, and a rejection of modern secularism,” Alexander Hall of Fox wrote.
In general, data consistently shows that Gen Z Christians are more committed in attending church than the older generations, and young men are leading the charge.
Hall profiled St. Joseph’s Church in Greenwich Village in particular. Their 90-minute Mass has recently seen attendance quadruple as congregants pack even the foyer.
They also host a “Pizza to Pews” social group that meets at a local restaurant prior to Mass. The meet-up grew “from 100 to over 200 participants in just three weeks, with some young adults traveling from as far as Boston to attend.”
Young women are hosting rosary walks around the city that are welcoming up to 150 people.
The Wall Street Journal also wrote that “Young New Yorkers Have a New Hot Spot: Sunday Mass.”
In a WSJ post on Facebook talking about the Pizza to Pews boom, many members of the public chimed in to share that they are witnessing similar trends in their own parishes.
“I love this – we’re seeing it in our own parish, too. Lots of young adults and beautiful young families. The call to holiness is challenging and worthy of effort,” Emma L. wrote.
Melissa R. added, “My church too Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More standing room only is all 5 services on Sundays with college students. And during the week they added evening services to accommodate student schedules to attend during the week. God is Great.”
