Briefly shelved, President Trump’s “Project Freedom” could reopen the Strait of Hormuz in days after a secret squabble with Gulf allies which stopped the military operation.
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have tranquilly reopened their bases and airspace to the US military, which could revive the currently paused “Project Freedom” mission to protect ships from Iranian attacks, the Wall Street Journal reported.
According to a story by The New York Post, previously the Gulf countries had recoiled at letting the US use their territory for “Project Freedom,” which Trump ceased on Tuesday less than 48 hours after it was activated, citing a request from Pakistan and “other countries.”
The judgement came after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman canceled access to pivotal Saudi bases and airspace needed for the mission, according to a story by Newsmax that cited U.S. officials.
On Sunday, the operation had been announced by Trump on social media as a move to thwart Iran’s blockade of the strategic waterway. Saudi leaders were irked by the move, saying they had not been adequately consulted beforehand, the officials told NBC News.
Saudi Arabia responded by informing the United States it would no longer permit U.S. military aircraft to fly from Prince Sultan Air Base or transit Saudi airspace for the operation.
On Wednesday, Trump announced Project Freedom would be “paused for a short period of time: while talks continued.
The U.S. military keeps aircraft, refueling tankers, and air defense systems at Prince Sultan Air Base.
Officials said Saudi cooperation is essential for U.S. operations in the Gulf due to basing and overflight requirements.
