The matter of Greenland is back.

The theme of the arctic, strategically important nation returned, as Trump administration officials allegedly have met with Greenland delegates in Washington, D.C., several times in recent months to discuss the role the U.S. will have on the island, as the specter of China and Russia looms in the background, according to a story by Newsmax.

Since he took the presidential office for his second term, President Donald Trump has increasingly lobbied to bolster America’s military and economic position in the more and more tactical arctic region.

Since January, envoys from the U.S., Greenland, and Denmark have held at least five meetings and centered on expanding America’s presence in Greenland, a mineral-rich arctic territory viewed as crucial to countering growing Russian and Chinese influence, The New York Times reported Monday.

In fact, the negotiations allegedly started after Trump repeatedly called for a greater U.S. power over Greenland, contending that the island is essential to American national security.

Still, after initially trading barbs with detractors in Europe who see Trump’s intervention as the sign of a bullying superpower, the administration toned down the rhetoric in the public sphere, while discussions have continued in backroom deals over military expansion, mineral development, and infrastructure oversight.

Last week, the BBC reported that the Trump administration was in talks to establish as many as three additional military bases in southern Greenland, including possible sites close to Narsarsuaq and Kangerlussuaq, both former American Cold War outposts with existing airstrips and harbor infrastructure.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland’s Prime Minister admitted that an increased American military presence is “part of the discussions,” while maintaining Greenland’s sovereignty stands as “non-negotiable.”
