The fragile Middle East truce fumbled Monday, as Iran allegedly attacked the United Arab Emirates, while American forces destroyed six Iranian military boats, as Tehran fired on U.S. ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Emirati authorities condemned Iran for a drone attack that started a fire in the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone, the largest oil storage area in the Emirates, in the first attack since a cease-fire was reached in early April. In neighboring Oman, two people were injured by an attack in Bukha, near Emirati territory, according to an Omani state news agency, which did not identify the culprit.
Still, the White House on Monday defended President Donald Trump’s “Project Freedom” as a humanitarian effort to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, as companies cautioned the plan lacks the security guarantees required to proceed transit in the conflict zone, according to a story by Newsmax.
In effect, Iran has constrained traffic through the strait, a pivotal chokepoint for the global oil trade, since the conflict with the U.S. and Israel started on Feb. 28.
The tenuous truce between the U.S. and Iran was tested as American ships clearing a lane in the Strait of Hormuz came under fire and sank Iranian boats.

In the meantime, shipping companies have been unwilling to navigate the strait despite Trump’s plan for U.S. guidance of commercial vessels, mentioning a deficit of operational detail and continued security risks, The New York Times reported Monday.
Nevertheless, The White House defended the effort as a humanitarian and strategic mission.
“The United States is undertaking a humanitarian initiative to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, while maintaining a successful naval blockade on Iranian ports,” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales said in a statement to Newsmax.
“While Iran chose to attack innocent commercial vessels, the United States is assuming the risk on behalf of the international community to defend international commerce and guide stranded ships safely through the strait.”
