With questions already swirling about the security infrastructure surrounding the president in the wake of the latest attempt on his life, another curious story has emerged pertaining to the night of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Around 8:35 PM EST on April 25, 2026, the president’s attempted assassin began blazing past security. President Trump and Vice President JD Vance were evacuated by the Secret Service, but most of the dinner attendees were locked down at the Washington Hilton for one to two hours.
Some members of the public noted it was strange that around 9:25 PM, a CNN commentator uploaded a video of Erika Kirk, widow of Charlie Kirk, exiting the hotel in apparent distress and saying “I just want to go home,” when most guests were supposed to be kept on the premises still. Independent investigative journalists have reached out to this commentator to ask if she herself recorded this video, but it is still unknown whether the video originated with her.
Candace Owens shares email reportedly from White House Military Office instructing people to amplify Erika Kirk’s ‘I just want to go home’ video from WHCD shooting

Podcasters like Baron Coleman noticed an interesting trend on X (the social media platform) immediately after news of the shooting broke: many right-wing influencers were posting in near-unison with their full support for President Trump’s proposed ballroom addition to the White House, and then were similarly emotionally reacting to the Erika Kirk video. Critics questioned whether the video of Kirk exiting the event was staged or if capturing it on camera was a planned event.
Though many of those critics were largely dismissed as cruel or conspiracy theorists, information allegedly leaked to podcaster Candace Owens lends credence to the idea that the video played a role in a larger public relations (PR) campaign.
According to Owens, an email was allegedly sent to the wrong internal teams from the military office domain from the White House Communications Agency, meaning from a Department of Defense email domain working for the White House. Apparently, the mistaken recipients of the emails were asked to delete any record of the communication. Further, a “canary” system is used with sensitive emails sent to larger groups in which particular details are edited or typos are intentionally made so that they are able to pinpoint who the perpetrator is in case an email gets leaked externally.
To protect the source’s identity, Owens did not publish the actual email leaked to her, but she did retype it for users to see.
Something is really off with this. We need a Nation that can trust its own Government. God help us. https://t.co/t7sFlJ3NRz

The email, sent about an hour after the shooting, allegedly reads in part:
ADDENDUM–ERIKA KIRK VIDEO CLIP
Video clip of Erika Kirk leaving the ballroom area and stating “I just want to go home” is driving the highest engagement of all incident-related content across platforms
Current digital assessment:
Recommendation: All communications channels should amplify this clip. Coordinate with our digital partners and approved surrogates to elevate reach and ensure dominant placement in the overnight information environment.
Most viral engagement presently centered around attendee reaction clips now circulating broadly across platforms.
EXTERNAL COMMENTARY
Expect aligned outside commentators to independently amplify:
If this email is legitimate, commentators like Owens are asking questions: why was the White House, the military wing specifically, concerned with a clip of Erika Kirk going viral about an hour after the shooting? Who are the “digital partners” and “approved surrogates” referenced in the communication? Does the military have an active role in shaping media narratives domestically?
At this time of publishing, there is no known statement from the White House confirming or denying the veracity of this email.
