A man who started firing in the West Texas city of Midland in an attack Friday morning that left one person dead and 10 injured, had shot at a police officer just days earlier during a chase, authorities said.
The active shooter who barricaded himself in a Midland, Texas building died after a shooting that left one person dead and 11 people injured Friday, according to authorities.
A SWAT team and about 100 police officers reacted to a veterinary hospital building around 8 a.m. local time, a spokesman for the Midland Police Department said. Shortly before noon, the man was confirmed to be dead.
“The active shooter situation is resolved and the shooter is now deceased,” Midland Mayor Lori Blong said in an afternoon press conference, adding that the information was based on robot and drone footage. “Law enforcement is still securing the area.”
“Our thoughts and prayers are absolutely with the victims and with the community,” Blong told reporters at a press conference.
Midland police and the Texas Rangers were searching a day before the shooting for Victor Mata Villarreal, who escaped police after shooting at officers using a rifle, after they stopped his vehicle during a traffic stop.

Villarreal is wanted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer.
On Friday, the city asked the public to avoid the area while the place remained under investigation. Road closures remained in place while law enforcement continued to investigate the scene, according to the city.
City officials did not yet have details about the suspect or the person who died in the shooting, she added.
Authorities opened a family reunification center at Midland Memorial Hospital where people looking to reunify with loved ones were urged to reach out for help. People seeking information about family members are asked to report in person at the chapel.
Known as an energy and oil boomtown located in the heart of the Permian Basin in West Texas, Midland is home to about 195,000 people, according to the city.
