Things are heating up between Mexico’s president and the Trump administration.
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s president accused the Trump administration of meddling in her nation’s internal affairs, pointing out a request for the arrest and extradition of government officials, according to a story by Newsmax.
Over the weekend, Sheinbaum worsened friction with Washington, accusing the United States of exceeding its authority after the Justice Department reportedly asked for the arrest and extradition of 10 Mexican officials, including elected officeholders allegedly with links to drug trafficking, DPA reported.
As she spoke at a rally in Mexico City that marked the second anniversary of her election victory, Sheinbaum said that Mexico would not permit foreign interference in its domestic affairs.
“We do not accept interference. We are a free, independent, and sovereign country,” Sheinbaum told supporters Sunday. “Mexico is nobody’s piñata.”
According to Sheinbaum, the U.S. request targets a governor, a mayor, and a sitting senator, although she did not publicly identify the officials.

One of those allegedly named is Sinaloa Gov. Ruben Rocha Moya, who has been connected by U.S. prosecutors to drug-trafficking investigations, according to Bloomberg.
Since he took office, Trump has pressured Mexico to step up actions against organized crime while also pursuing a broader America First agenda on immigration and border security.
Sheinbaum has answered by extraditing dozens of wanted criminals to the U.S. and cooperating on anti-cartel operations. However, relations have declined in recent weeks after the indictments, ongoing trade disputes, and questions surrounding U.S. involvement in counternarcotics operations inside Mexico.
Trump has even said he is willing to quash the cartels in Mexico.
