The war in Iran is off, just hours after President Donald Trump announced U.S. forces would pummel Iranian sites hard.

Late Thursday, Trump claimed that an initial agreement was made to finally end the war between both countries. He said he would cancel the strikes against Iran.

“We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran,” he told reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday.

But Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told state TV that reports of an agreement were “speculative” and “nothing has been finalized”.

Earlier Thursday morning, Trump said the U.S. will be striking Iran “very hard” and “will be taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points” as it looks to end the Middle East conflict.

Trump declared in a Truth Social post that Iran’s military proficiencies have been mostly vanquished and warned that additional U.S. military action is forthcoming, according to a story by Newsmax.

“The United States will be hitting Iran (Whose Navy, Air Force, Radar, Anti-Aircraft, and all other forms of Defense, together with most of its offensive capability, are GONE!), VERY HARD TONIGHT,” Trump wrote.

Trump also summarized an uncompromising economic strategy geared toward dispossessing Tehran of energy profits that have long subsidized the regime and its military operations.

“At some point in the not-too-distant future, we will be taking Kharg Island, and other oil infrastructure points, and assume total control of their Oil and Gas Markets,” Trump said.

Iran’s main oil-export terminal, Kharg Island has historically handled the vast majority of the country’s crude exports.

“We will … assume total control of their Oil and Gas Markets, much like we have with Venezuela, which is working out brilliantly for both Venezuela and the United States of America,” Trump wrote.

Energy experts have viewed the place as central to Tehran’s ability to generate hard-currency revenue.
