Sen. Rand Paul said he issued the subpoena because Dr. Anthony Fauci declined to voluntarily testify to his committee.

For years, Dr. Anthony Fauci was considered the ultimate medical authority in the country, especially during the COVID-19 crisis, when he became a national symbol of unrelenting clinical power, paving way for imposed face masks, closed churches, fired employees who refused to take vaccines or criticized the government and iron-fisted lockdowns as bedlam struck the nation.
But now, the Senate has subpoenaed Fauci after the release of documents that opponents said showed the former head of the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) provided false testimony to lawmakers, according to a story by The Epoch Times.
On June 22, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said that he asked Fauci to testify in voluntary form to the panel he chairs, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Fauci refused.
“Therefore, today I have issued a subpoena requiring him to testify before the Committee, in public, next month,” Paul said on X.
The head of the NIAID from 1984 to 2022, Fauci told lawmakers while testifying in 2024 that he did not talk about viral research related to COVID-19 with intelligence officials. He said at the time he was briefed by intelligence officials “about possibilities of there being activities going on in different laboratories.”
Tulsi Gabbard, who unveiled the new files on her last day as director of national intelligence, said in a statement that “politicized self-serving leaders like Dr. Fauci covered up their own wrongdoing and abuses of power, manipulated intelligence, lied to Congress, and undermined a duly elected President by restricting his access to vital facts needed to keep the country safe.”
Fauci, whose agency also gave funding to a laboratory in Wuhan, China, close to where the first COVID-19 cases appeared, told Paul in combative hearings during the pandemic that the United States did not fund a type of risky research called gain-of-function there. Other officials have said that’s not true.
