The Department of the Interior is discontinuing 43 partnerships with outside groups it says no longer side with the Trump administration’s priorities, cutting more than $4 million in planned funding for programs linked to DEI, environmental justice and support services for illegal immigrants, according to a story by Fox News.
Headed by Secretary Doug Burgum, the department concluded the agreements were “operating in direct opposition” to its mission, according to a press release obtained exclusively by Fox News Digital.
“Under Secretary Burgum, the Department of the Interior is ending partnerships with groups that no longer represent the priorities of the American people,” the department said. In response, DOI said it is terminating all agreements with the identified groups and removing references to them from its websites.
The agreements that were terminated funded internship programs, conservation initiatives, research projects and cooperative partnerships.
Initiated in March, the review revealed almost 3,000 active agreements with about 2,000 outside groups, going from NGOs and nonprofits to private entities and educational institutions.
According to the Department, the review discovered several groups “did not appear to provide a clear benefit” or “did not align with the department’s mission,”
The Department targeted groups like the Hispanic Access Foundation, which offers scholarships for illegal immigrant Latino students, and Latino Outdoors, which the department said gave instructions on evading detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Latino Outdoors has lobbied against oil and gas development, while the Hispanic Access Foundation has worked with the National Park Service “to conduct a variety of educational and cultural support activities,” according to the department.
