On Wednesday, President Donald Trump said during an interview on “Pod Force One” that he anticipates meeting Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei for peace negotiations.
Since the war started on Feb. 28, Mojtaba, 56, hasn’t been seen in public. The surprise US-Israeli airstrikes reportedly injured him and killed his father, the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and other members of his family, according to a story by Newsmax.
Talking with Miranda Devine on the “Pod Force One” podcast released Wednesday, Trump said Khamenei continues to be actively involved in decision-making even though he has not been seen publicly since the war began Feb. 28 after U.S.-Israeli airstrikes.
“He’s involved, absolutely,” Trump said. “Yeah, I think they have a lot of respect for him.”

Nevertheless, Khamenei’s absence from the public eye has muddled negotiations, the president said, which have relied on couriers to relay messages between the sides.
“I haven’t had the privilege of meeting him … If you believe the stories, he’s missing a lot of different parts,” Trump told Devine.
Still, he suggested communications have been fruitful.
“They say he is giving approval because that’s the way it has been for a long, long time,” Trump said. “His father and then him, I guess it’s a succession. But we seem to be getting along quite well.”
When queried if he would like to get together with Mojtaba Khamenei, Trump replied, “Yeah, I’d like to meet him. I’d love to meet everybody. I would like to meet him, and we probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out.”
Known as the master of the deal since the 1980’s and throughout his political career, Trump has advocated for direct meetings with foreign leaders, including those viewed as adversaries of the United States.
