The Trump Food and Drug Administration unleashed a long-awaited safety review of a dangerous abortion pill, in a move lauded by pro-life advocates who have been pleading with federal authorities to take a scrupulous look at the drug that gained access nationwide under Biden-era policies.
Administration officials told The Wall Street Journal the investigation could take about six months to complete and is expected to focus on the safety of the abortion drug, mifepristone, especially as its use has grown through telehealth appointments and mail-order distribution, according to a story by Newsmax.
The review is a major development for pro-life groups and congressional Republicans who have argued that federal regulators should reexamine policies that allow women to obtain abortion pills without an in-person doctor’s visit.
“We already know chemical abortions kill babies and endanger women,” Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., chairman of the Senate Health Committee, told the Journal. “The Trump administration needs to stop dragging their feet and immediately reinstate the in-person requirement.”
The FDA’s review comes while there is a growing vexation among some pro-life leaders, who have pressured the Trump administration to initiate stronger moves on abortion-pill regulation. While President Donald Trump has generally supported permitting states to set abortion policy, many pro-life groups have contended that the federal government still has authority to regulate abortion drugs nationwide.
Still, White House officials recently convened with representatives of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, one of the organizations insisting on a greater federal examination of mifepristone.
Earlier this year, the Supreme Court permitted the abortion pill to have broad access while legal challenges remain. In addition, a Louisiana judge also instructed the FDA to give an update by October on its review of the agency’s abortion-pill regulations.
Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas has allegedly assured pro-life leaders that the agency remains steadfast when it comes to reviewing the matter. Public records show he also met with Cassidy in May regarding the study.
