In a sign of progress, peace talks between the U.S. and Iran seem to be moving forward, as Vice President JD Vance said the negotiations created a “good foundation for a successful final deal” to end the war that began at the end of February.

“The final deal is the house,” Vance told reporters in remarks, airing live on Newsmax. “We set the foundation. We haven’t built the house, but we’ve laid a successful foundation to get to a good place for the American people.”

After having a long round of initial discussions with Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalifaf on Monday, Vance spoke about having an enduring end to the war between both countries.

Still, the peace talks that took place in Switzerland, which started Sunday and stretched into the early hours of Monday, had uncertain moments. But the talks also led to some agreements between the two sides.

Though President Donald Trump did not take part in the ‘Lake Lucerne Summit,’ his comments and policy positions remained a topic of discussion during the negotiations.

Before the talks gave way, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had vowed to “never back down from the right to enrich uranium,” according to state media.

On Sunday, Trump countered by telling Fox News in a phone interview that Pezeshkian should watch what he says and also threatened to take over Iran, according to one of the news channel’s correspondents.

It’s uncertain when Vance will leave Switzerland. Trump envoys Kushner and Steve Witkoff are handling many of the technical details on behalf of the U.S. delegation.
