Amidst growing tensions and escalations of war between the U.S. and Iran, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to travel to Washington to meet with President Donald Trump.
Some international observers believe the meeting between the allies may have to do with expanding military operations against Iran. It will be Netanyahu’s first official visit to Washington since the war started between the U.S. and Israel against Tehran, according to a story by Newsmax.
Netanyahu will also attend the funeral of Lindsey Graham, the late South Carolina Sen. whom his office described as “a friend of Israel.”
Tuesday’s visit comes as Trump considers renewing major military attacks against Iran following Operation Epic Fury, and amid continued worries over Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Axios, Netanyahu has met with Trump six times since the president returned to office 18 months ago, more than any other world leader.
The meeting between Netanyahu and Trump also comes at a politically complex moment. Axios reported that while the Israeli Prime Minister remains one of Trump’s closest foreign allies, he has become progressively unpopular among Democrats, some members of Trump’s inner circle, and portions of the MAGA movement over disagreements about the direction of the Middle East conflict.
The Jerusalem Post reported that Netanyahu’s office confirmed journalists will not be permitted to travel aboard the prime minister’s official aircraft, Wing of Zion, though media traveling independently may apply for credentials.
