Articles | July 20, 2026 | by Catholics for Catholics

Authorities took into custody an individual for allegedly positioning an incendiary device outside of a federal building in Manhattan on Monday, injuring two people, according to Kash Patel, the FBI’s director.

Patel said in a post on X that the incident happened outside 26 Federal Plaza, where several government agencies dwell, including the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and immigration courts.

“This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza in New York,” Patel wrote. “The individual is in custody and two minor injuries reported thus far. FBI JTTF is investigating the incident.”

However, authorities did not identify the injured individuals or state whether they were civilians, federal employees, or law enforcement personnel.

In addition, authorities did not provide any information about the individual’s identity, possible motive, or potential charges were immediately released.

The FBI’s New York Joint Terrorism Task Force is leading the investigation, according to Patel.

Officials have not said whether the incident is being investigated as terrorism or whether the incendiary device caused any significant property damage.
