The Trump administration is asking lawmakers to approve funding for a possible budget shortfall that could jeopardize the country in case of another conflict.

Mostly because of the increasing war with Iran, the U.S. is looking at a drastic budget shortage, compelling cuts to military training and upkeep while policymakers are stalemated over President Donald Trump’s request for billions of dollars in emergency funding.

According to a story by Newsmax, defense officials and lawmakers say some crucial operations accounts could run out of money within weeks, bringing worries about armed preparedness as the administration readies for the possibility of a bigger conflict after the failure of a ceasefire with Tehran.

In response to the war, the White House has asked Congress to pass an immediate $67 billion emergency funding package to fund war-related expenses, but the demand has been postponed amid partisan infighting, with the House scheduled to leave Washington on Thursday for a monthlong August recess.

“Everybody needs to look at this situation and get rid of the complacency that they have,” North Carolina GOP Rep. Pat Harrigan, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said in an interview.

The Pentagon declined to comment.

Some lawmakers complain that War Department officials have not met deadlines to provide detailed information about the war’s costs and the military’s remaining inventories of precision-guided munitions after expending thousands of them during operations against Iran.

“We need to know what we’re purchasing and why we’re purchasing it,” Rep. Betty McCollum of Minnesota, the ranking Democrat on the House defense appropriations panel, said.

But War Secretary Pete Hegseth has publicly dismissed concerns about depleted weapons stockpiles, saying in a television interview last month that U.S. inventories are “great, and they’re only getting stronger.”
