A Gallup poll from this summer demonstrates a general downward trend in support for same-sex marriage and the morality of same-sex relationships since 2022.
Support for same-sex marriage reached a high of 71% according to Gallup in 2022 and 2023. That number decreased to 65% this year.
Notably, Gallup also found that 62% of respondents view gay or lesbian relationships as moral which is a sharp decline from 71% in 2022. This is the lowest level of support for the issue since 2016.
In addition, the perceived morality of “changing” one’s gender is down eight percentage points from 2021. Only 38% of respondents view this as acceptable in 2026.
Republicans account for most of the downward trends. In 2022, 51% of Republicans favored same-sex marriage, but that number is now 37%, signaling a significant shift on social issues within the party. Democrats’ level of support has remained unchanged since 2022 at 87% while independents’ support has dropped to 67%.
The same trend is apparent for perceived morality of gay and lesbian relationships as well. While in 2022 56% of Republicans thought these same-sex relationships were “morally acceptable” regardless of their support for legalized same-sex marriage, that number has plummeted to 35%.
Interestingly, fewer Democrats find same-sex relationships as morally acceptable compared to 2022. As of this year, 81% of Democrats think same-sex relationships are morally acceptable, down from 85% in 2022.
Independents are following the same trend. In 20222, 72% of independents viewed same-sex relationships as morally acceptable, but 2026 results found that number dropped to 64%.
