Things are about to change in Florida’s schools.

According to a story by Fox49, the Florida Board of Education approved last November new standards for an upcoming “History of Communism” curriculum coming to the state’s schools.

The standards, FDOE officials said, were “developed by Florida educators and content experts.” They’re set to be applied to middle and high school students beginning in the 2026-27 school year.

“With the adoption of the History of Communism Standards, Florida is leading the nation by equipping students with a truthful, in-depth understanding of how communist ideologies suppress individual freedoms, abuse power, and inflict widespread suffering,” FDOE said.

Florida’s new state standards compel middle and high school students to study the history of communist governments, including how authoritarian regimes have been connected to poverty, famine, political repression, and violence.

Most of the benchmarks are in two elective courses created at the high school level.

In addition, the curriculum also requires at least 45 minutes of instruction each year on victims of communism day — a state-mandated day of remembrance created under the law.

“I think this is Florida’s attempt to say let’s give young people factual information about what the differences are and what the true implications of that ideology is,” Fetsko said.

Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, Florida’s prerequisites also expand instruction on the history and impact of communism. Students will learn about communist ideologies, major historical figures and events, the experiences of victims under communist regimes, and the impact of communism around the world and in the United States. Instruction will also include comparisons among communism, totalitarianism, democracy, and individual liberty.
