A two-year-old who was wandering the streets of a Tennessee town alone, in a dirty diaper, was rescued by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers who were arresting illegal immigrants, according to a story by the Daily Wire.

ICE officers performing a “routine enforcement operation” outside Nashville in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, on July 13, an area with a large population of illegal immigrants, came to an abrupt halt when they noticed a small child who was drifting alone in the road in a heavily soiled diaper and was almost hit by a passing vehicle, the agency said. It seemed that the child had been roving the streets for several hours without any adult supervision.

The officers, some of whom are fathers, rapidly took the child into safety.

According to the Wire, officer Michael Joyce, who is part of an ICE Nashville Fugitive Operations Team, said the boy was in the middle of the parking lot when he got to the scene. The agent stopped traffic while his team called local police and located the child’s mother, who was asleep in an apartment close by, with the door wide-open.

She seemed oblivious that her son had wandered off.

“Our officers are trained to respond to emergencies and protect the public, no matter the circumstances,” ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations New Orleans acting Field Office Director Scott Ladwig, whose office oversees operations in Tennessee, said in a statement.

“We’re grateful that our team was able to act quickly and help ensure this child’s safety,” Ladwig said. “Supporting our communities and working alongside local law enforcement is a responsibility we take seriously.”

The Murfreesboro Police Department returned the little boy to his mother, who told officers that it was the first time her child left their home alone, ICE said. No criminal charges were filed against the mother.
