On Monday, Tehran said there were no peace talks under way with the United States and no arrangements for any meetings, refuting President Donald Trump, who had said negotiations would start that afternoon as part of his resolution not to authorize military strikes.
Over the weekend, Trump threatened military action against Iran before later saying he would pursue diplomacy instead, according to a story by Newsmax.
“Would I rather make a deal? I’m not looking to kill people,” Trump said aboard Air Force One on Sunday.
“Now what we’re doing is talking to them, in the form of a negotiation. It begins tomorrow afternoon,” he said, without identifying a venue or participants for such talks.
But Esmail Baghaei, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, denied the claim, saying no discussions with the United States were under way and no engagements were scheduled. Iran had no plans to host foreign delegations or send negotiators abroad in the coming days, he said.

Baghaei added that all Iranian negotiators were currently in the country, apart from Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who was on a religious pilgrimage in Iraq. The only talks under way, he said, were discussions with Oman over management of the Strait of Hormuz.
More than five months ago Trump launched “Operation Epic Fury” alongside Israel, in which proposed or threatened U.S. military action was followed by announcements that diplomatic efforts would instead be pursued.
Nevertheless, Iran has publicly rejected negotiations with Washington since a June memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict collapsed in early July.
But the Trump administration has said its aims include dismantling Iran’s nuclear program, reducing its ability to attack regional rivals and creating conditions for political change inside Iran. The extent to which those objectives have been achieved remains disputed.
