Republican lawmakers are at odds with some of President Donald Trump’s latest trade initiatives, including his resolve to expand access to foreign beef and his growing tariff quarrel with Canada, according to ABC News.
The backlash, according to a story by Newsmax, comes as Republicans face political pressure over the cost of groceries and other household expenses heading into the midterm elections.
Lawmakers from cattle-producing states have objected to the administration’s decision to allow additional foreign beef into the U.S. market as Trump seeks to bring down high beef prices.
The lawmakers contend that increasing imports could undermine American cattle producers at a time when the U.S. cattle herd remains historically low.

In addition, GOP leaders have also said they are worried about Trump’s increasing confrontation with Canada, a major U.S. trading partner.
Still, the White House has defended Trump’s trade policies as part of an effort to put American workers, farmers and businesses first.
