Trump Tells Donors JD Vance Should Be His Successor

Articles | August 7, 2026 | by Catholics for Catholics

JD Vance is the man.

Though he has often been mum about who he would support as his successor, President Donald Trump allegedly told donors recently that Vice President JD Vance, a figure seen by many as the face of the new Catholicism in the nation, should succeed him as the country’s chief executive.

In private, Trump told supporters during an Oval Office meeting about two weeks ago, “at the end of the day, we need to elect JD,” inferring that he may be tilting toward supporting Vance as his favored heir for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, The Washington Post reported Thursday.

Trump’s comments show a shift from his public posture over the past year, during which he often fed rumors by praising both Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio while refusing to identify a clear favorite, according to a story by Newsmax.

Vance, a former protestant who converted to Catholicism, has said many times he remains focused on serving as vice president and has not chosen whether he will seek the White House in 2028.

Vance told CBS News in June he wishes to discuss the matter with his family after the 2026 midterm elections and said he was confident Trump would support whatever decision he makes.

Still, the Post reported that Trump has liked Vance’s work inside the administration, including his role in parlaying a June ceasefire proposal with Iran, leading efforts to combat fraud in federal benefit programs, and aggressively defending the administration during a series of media appearances.

Nevertheless, Rubio remains a valued figure within the administration, but his work as secretary of state and national security adviser leaves little room for presidential politics.
