The Trump administration is increasing its intelligence in Cuba, as it looks to put pressure on the island’s communist regime into implementing all-encompassing reforms or possibly even have it removed from power, according to a story by Politico.
One source, according to Newsmax, told the outlet the U.S. has “recently sent spies and assets to Cuba,” while a second described the move as increasing the CIA’s “presence,” though neither disclosed the scope of the effort or which intelligence agencies are involved because of the sensitivity of the operations.
According to the report, the increased intelligence could lay the groundwork for a range of options, from bigger efforts to recruit Cuban officials or citizens to cooperate with the United States to laying the base for possible military action.
One of the sources said that a bigger intelligence presence is “a key tactical step” that could pave the way for a U.S. military incursion, while warning that “the outlines of any such operation are far from clear.”
Still, the CIA, the White House, Defense Intelligence Agency, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence did not respond to the outlet’s requests for comment.
Notwithstanding the administration’s ongoing emphasis on the war with Iran, one person familiar with the plans said, “Iran doesn’t need to be solved before we go there,” adding that Cuba is “a huge priority of Rubio’s,” referring to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The reported intelligence buildup comes as Cuba continues to endure one of the worst electricity crises in its history, including yet another on Monday of this week.
