Perturbing footage has come to light of a newborn baby who was discarded in a sanitary trash can at an airport toilet in Malaysia.
Luckily, the baby boy was discovered alive after he was heard crying by a cleaner who notified police at Penang International Airport on August 31.
Still, some lamentable footage shows the baby lying inside the container, which was lined with a blue plastic bag, as he cried, according to a story by the New York Post.
The baby still had his umbilical cord attached to the placenta, which swung as airport staff lifted him out to safety.
“Cleaning staff heard cries coming from a sanitary bin in a toilet designated for people with disabilities and called police,” Southwest District police chief Anuwal Ab Wahab said.
The baby was transported to Penang Hospital for treatment and was observed to be healthy. Officials said he was in a “generally good condition”.
After rescuing the baby, police examined the CCTV footage from the airport and later detained a 23-year-old woman and a 22-year-old Burmese national who works as a security guard.
“The man was detained to assist with investigations into the case, and he was also found to have failed to produce valid travel documents,” the police chief said.
‘The case was being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code, which relates to the abandonment of a child under 12 by a parent or person having care of the child.’
Anyone convicted of abandoning a child under 12 can face up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both.
The two persons who were arrested have not yet been deemed to be the baby’s parents, while forensic tests are being conducted to determine their relationship to the newborn.
Investigations are ongoing.
