Catholic Parents Lose Custody of Daughter in Massachusetts for Not Affirming Transgender Identity

Articles | September 14, 2026 | by Catholics for Catholics

Catholic parents are battling state authorities in Massachusetts after their daughter was removed from their home almost two years ago – allegedly because they did not want to affirm their daughter’s new identity as a boy, which they say the public school facilitated in secret.

Joseph and Arlene Kutzko have not seen their daughter, Sophie, since December of 2024 when the Department of Children & Families (DCF) removed her from their home according to Red State and Fox News. She was 15 years old at the time.

And yet just two months prior, Sophie had written on a birthday card to her father, “Without you, I would have nothing. So it’s wholeheartedly, fully, sincerely, I love you with no end.”

The Kutzkos say the nightmare began when they realized that Algonquian Regional High School in Southboro Massachusetts had exposed Sophie to radical gender ideology and a school counselor helped “transition” her without their knowledge or consent.

This counselor, according to the Kutzkos, then contacted DCF, which removed Sophie from the family home and obtained a permanent restraining order against the family who has not been allowed any contact with her. DCF also accused Joseph of physical abuse, though reports say those allegations were deemed unfounded.

Since then, Sophie has been housed in male dormitories, has not been able to attend Sunday Mass, and was put on birth control and psychiatric drugs, according to the parents.

Thankfully, a judge at least temporarily blocked the state from beginning hormonal therapy – injecting testosterone – in Sophie, but the Kutzkos’ fight is not over.

The next court hearing on this is scheduled for October 29.
