What was once the fictional domain of science fiction in films like the Terminator series, humanoid robots in China are now a reality and reportedly are being prepared for war. The machines are not yet ready for combat, but with today’s rapidly advancing technology, they are expected to be battle equipped soon.
According to a story by the Daily Signal, at the World Humanoid Robot Games in China last month, robots danced, boxed and jumped. Some fleet-footed bots ran faster than Usain Bolt over 100 meters. The crowd cheered the machines’ improving capabilities and their meme-worthy stumbles.
After the games concluded, the People’s Liberation Army’s official newspaper drew its own deductions from the show. The publication called for researchers to accelerate the transfer of cutting-edge technologies from laboratories to military training grounds for robotic “combatants.”
Meanwhile, China’s military machine is intensifying its research into humanoids’ military uses and planning for their ensuing wartime operation, according to a Reuters review of more than 100 Chinese military procurement notices, academic studies, patents, official publications, government records and defense-company materials.
The fact is, military organizations are putting humanoids to the test in battlefield conditions, seeking to get robots and technologies to train them, and examining how they might function next to troops, the previously unreported records show. The work gained momentum in 2025 and 2026, focusing on robot perception, manipulation, and training data.

But there’s no doubt that when it comes to humanoid robots, China has the edge. Chinese manufacturers accounted for about 95% of global humanoid shipments in 2025, according to BofA Global Research. That commercial dominance gives the PLA access to an expanding industry while developing its own military applications.
Nevertheless, China isn’t alone in exploring humanoids for battlefield uses. Last year, the U.S. Army launched a competition to develop “militarized humanoid capabilities” that could in time work next to soldiers.
Potential roles for the robots included reconnaissance, security, obstacle clearing, hazardous-material operations and offensive and defensive missions in urban terrain. Up to 10 finalists were due to test their systems with U.S. military experts this year, with as much as $1.25 million available for follow-on contracts.
